From backbone applications to FTTH to 5G, fiber is everywhere. Fiber is in long-distance networks, and forms the backbone and distribution networks for all types of wired and wireless communications services. This means that fiber is deployed in a wide variety of environments and network architectures. To meet the requirements of these diverse networks, the choice of fiber and cable types has also never been higher. From different fiber types to fiber structures within cables to cable types, one size definitely doesn’t fit all. This webinar will provide a survey of fiber and cable types to help guide the end user towards a deeper understanding of how to choose cable types for a specific application.
Attendees will learn about different fiber types that are used in various outside plant networks. They will also learn about different fiber structures, such as loose tube, ribbon, and rollable ribbon fiber structures. We will also discuss the pros and cons of different cable types in different applications, such as the following:
- Loose tube and microcable designs
- Flat ribbon and rollable ribbon in loose tube designs
- Flat ribbon and rollable ribbon in central tube designs
Presenter by: Mark Boxer, Technical Manager, Solutions and Applications Engineering, OFS. In this role, he assists customers deploying fiber in a wide variety of network design scenarios around the world and analyzes trends in telecommunications markets that drive new product innovation. Mark has a BME degree from Georgia Tech, and has spent his 30+ year career in the fiber industry. His experience includes varied roles in manufacturing and applications engineering for fiber-based products and markets. Other activities include inventor of six US Patents, member and past Secretary of the IEEE Power Engineering Society Fiber Optic Working Group, and contributing member to the Fiber Broadband
