New Innovations in High Density Fiber Cabling Systems

Presented by John George, Senior Director, Solutions and Professional Services, OFS

Optical Fiber Cabling to the Small Cell, Residence and Business must fit more fiber in smaller spaces to satisfy requirements for dense, low visibility, cost effective networks. The industry has recently developed a number of new types of optical cabling systems to meet these needs. The key drivers and service provider pain points will be described, followed by an overview of these new types of optical cabling systems. To close, an application matrix will explain the types of optical cabling systems and their suitability to meet key service provider needs for cost effective, high density, end customer accepted installations.

John George has served with AT&T, Lucent Technologies and now OFS in various engineering and marketing roles. He currently leads the Solutions and Professional Services group for OFS’s optical fiber, cable, connectivity, and solutions business. John has published and presented numerous papers and articles on fiber optics and FTTH and has been active in Industry standards. John has been active in forming IEEE, IEC and TIA optical fiber related standards, and has been an active member of the Fiber Broadband Association (former FTTH Council) from its founding year of 2001, serving on its board of directors since 2008. John has a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech and a Master of Science in Engineering Administration from Virginia Tech, and holds 9 patents.
At OFS we provide optical fiber-based solutions for communications networks ranging from access, metro, regional, long haul, and even across Oceans. Accelerating FTTx and 5G Deployments with Digital Construction Innovation

Presented by Dan Flemming, Co-Founder and Frank DeJoy, VP, Network Deployment, Render Networks

Across the industry, the consumer need for high-speed broadband as well as the "race to 5G" is driving significant demand for tower and fiber infrastructure. The industry is looking for best-practice approaches and operating models that incorporate technologies and efficiency levers to deploy future-proofed networks faster without compromising quality or driving up costs.

In this session, Render Networks’ Co-founder and VP, Network Deployment outline a best-in-class digital deployment approach with practical examples of how network operators are delivering quality fiber networks with up to 50% efficiencies and a 20% reduction in time to market.

Key highlights include:

  • The role of geospatial technology and digital workflows in significantly reducing construction duration and cost.
  • A digital deployment playbook that optimizes and executes your network build strategy in line with strategic objectives.
Dan Flemming is a senior executive with 25 years experience delivering large telecommunications networks across Australia and New Zealand, Southeast Asia and more recently the United States. As the former Head of Construction at nbn Co., Dan’s deep operational and leadership experience brings to the table a unique perspective on effective and efficient deployment management. His vision is to truly innovate the way large-scale networks are deployed and pivot the industry towards a digital future of network construction.

Frank DeJoy is a telecommunications, wireless, and IT growth executive with over 30 years of strategic expertise across broadband, fiber optics, wireless, IoT, and network management. Frank’s credentials include global business, network, and product development in executive roles at AT&T Wireless, Teleport Communications Group, General Dynamics Wireless Services, Dycom, & Quanta Services. Frank received national and global accolades in FTTH, wireless, and IT network delivery, and is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Render’s Digital Network Construction platform enables network and utility owners and construction teams to solve the complexities associated with large-scale network deployment. Today’s GIS, mobile and automation technology, eliminates manual, paper-based construction approaches to deliver higher quality networks with schedule and cost efficiencies of up to 50%.

5G Fiber Densification Challenges

Presented by Maury Wood, Business Development Manager, EXFO

Among other technical dynamics, the reliance on small cell radios to achieve good 5G coverage, particularly in metro areas, means lots of optical fibers. This trend is referred to as fiber densification. While more fibers can deliver more bandwidth and lower latency, fresh challenges are introduced. For example, front haul hub site technicians can be overwhelmed with fiber management, identification and documentation. Outages caused by fiber breaks become more common, demanding higher productivity tools to resolve service interruptions quickly and efficiently. And fiber densification drives network architects to multi-fiber connectivity and cabling, which in turn requires new endface inspection and cleaning tools. This session will propose new solutions to the challenges presented by 5G fiber densification.

Maury Wood has spent most of his career in communications technologies and businesses, progressing from V.90 dial-up, xDSL broadband, 4G/5G, to optical networking. He focuses his efforts on North American key accounts for EXFO. Outside of work, Maury enjoys climbing and playing the bass.
