Quitter, Camper, or Climber?

Ah, the holidays are over and bam! We’re back at it — in the office, the truck, the field, or a mix of all three. Goals and objectives have been set for 2018. And now we face a daunting list of action items that will hopefully help us meet many of these pre-determined milestones.

But, if we don’t start out with the right perspective in January, we set ourselves up for an unnecessary internal battle. That’s why I find the book The Adversity Quotient @ Work so interesting. Paul G. Stoltz Morrow divides individuals in the workplace into 3 camps: Quitters, Campers, and Climbers. The Quitters retired a few years ago but never bothered to tell anybody. The Campers are ex-climbers, who get the job done sufficiently but have lost their edge and don’t strive as hard or sacrifice as much as in the past. Climbers are tenacious, dedicated to lifelong ascent, and have internal operating systems that lead them to push past the adversity they encounter.

Given those descriptions, I have to ask: which one am I? There may be days I’m a true Climber. Other days, I feel a bit like a Camper — a place to visit for only a short time. So, when Camping mode feels a little TOO comfortable, I need to get inspired. That’s when I look to reputable, trustworthy sources for a push in the right direction. Because if I try to go it alone, I feel, uh, alone. If I commit to learning something new, my energy grows. Then, boom! I exit the Camper camp with enthusiasm!

That’s why we do what we do here at ISE magazine. We want to help you stay motivated and stay away from Quitter or Camper mode. That’s also why we’ve created several new editorial initiatives for 2018. (Look for the details on ise.mediaquest.co.)
• Exclusive author podcasts
• Online (only) bonus features
• Executive insights video interviews
• A 3-part special section focusing on network transformation
• The 5th year of our peer-nominated ICT Visionaries

In today’s cut-throat telecom/ICT world, being a Quitter or Camper is a dead end. Instead, you want to consistently look in the mirror and say, "I’m giving it my all." Sure, change and growth are never easy. But, let’s be honest. If we’re not growing, we’re standing still.

Let us be your partner in growth and transformation in 2018. ’Cuz, being a Climber is a whole lot more rewarding than being a Camper.
