VIAVI Solutions, Inc. has received $1.1 million in funding from the European Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) and Horizon Europe to support the SHIELD-6G project, an initiative focused on developing AI-driven cybersecurity capabilities for next-generation 6G networks.
As operators and enterprises prepare for increasingly complex network environments, securing future wireless systems has become a key priority. SHIELD-6G aims to create an AI-driven Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI) platform designed to improve security, orchestration, and regulatory compliance across 6G networks.
As part of the project, VIAVI will use its TeraVM AI RAN Scenario Generator (RSG) technology to create digital twins of advanced network environments. These digital replicas will allow researchers and engineers to simulate potential cyber threats, generate realistic network data, and test AI-based security models before commercial 6G networks are deployed.
The technology is designed to support proactive security testing by enabling operators and technology developers to identify vulnerabilities, analyze anomalous behavior, and refine automated threat detection systems in controlled environments.
"Security for 6G networks has to be built in from day one, and that requires the ability to simulate, test and detect threats before a single commercial 6G signal goes live," said Ian Langley, SVP, Wireless, Security and Applications Business Unit, VIAVI.
The SHIELD-6G initiative is part of the Horizon Europe SNS JU program supporting European 6G research and innovation. The project brings together industry, academia, and network operators, including VIAVI, Ericsson, Nokia, THALES & THALES SIX, Telefónica, LMT of Latvia, and University College Dublin, which coordinates the consortium.
By combining AI, digital twin technology, and advanced network testing, SHIELD-6G aims to help establish security frameworks for future wireless networks before large-scale 6G deployments begin.
