VIAVI and Square Peg Team Up to Support Satellite and 5G NTN Network Testing
Key Highlights
- Square Peg Communications and VIAVI Solutions have formed a strategic partnership focused on advancing 5G non-terrestrial network (NTN) testing capabilities.
- The collaboration addresses key 5G NTN challenges, including Doppler effects, long propagation delays, satellite handovers, and hybrid terrestrial-satellite interoperability.
- The joint solution combines Square Peg’s satellite channel emulation technology with VIAVI’s wireless test and network validation platforms to enable end-to-end 3GPP-based testing.
Square Peg Communications, a company focused on emulation and testing of satellite and hybrid networks, has announced a partnership with VIAVI Solutions to support testing capabilities for the emerging 5G non-terrestrial network (NTN) market.
As satellite and terrestrial communications converge under 3GPP standards, stakeholders including network operators, chipset vendors, device manufacturers, and infrastructure providers are addressing new validation requirements. 5G NTN introduces performance considerations beyond traditional terrestrial mobile testing, such as Doppler shift effects, extended propagation delays, satellite handovers, and interoperability between terrestrial and satellite networks.
The collaboration combines Square Peg Communications’ experience in satellite communications and channel emulation with VIAVI Solutions’ expertise in wireless test and optimization across multiple generations of mobile technology, from 3G through 5G. The combined approach enables end-to-end emulation of 3GPP network, channel, and device behavior, using Square Peg’s RLS-2100 emulator to reproduce channel conditions and VIAVI’s TM500 Network Tester to simulate user equipment.
VIAVI provides testing solutions used across the wireless ecosystem for standards validation, protocol testing, RF performance evaluation, and field testing. Combined with Square Peg’s satellite link emulation capabilities, the collaboration is intended to support end-to-end NTN testing scenarios.
The integrated setup using the Square Peg RLS-2100 and the VIAVI TM500 is intended to support use cases including:
- gNodeB and network infrastructure testing
- 5G NTN NR validation
- Satellite channel and mobility emulation
- Beam and satellite handover scenarios
- Hybrid terrestrial and NTN service continuity validation
- Pre-certification and standards-based verification
Both companies indicate the collaboration is aimed at supporting validation of performance, interoperability, and resilience in next-generation NTN systems.
