Michels Pipeline, Inc. was among the contractors honored by the Pipeliners Association of Houston for work completed on the Regional Energy Access (REA) expansion, which earned the distinction of Project of the Year for 2024.

Michels installed 22.3 miles of 30-inch pipeline in Luzerne County, PA, which included 3,600 feet of bore and one Direct Pipe® installation under the Susquehanna River. Horizontal direction drilling, another trenchless method, was also employed for the project.

Additionally, we contributed engineering, procurement, and construction of a 9,000-horsepower compressor station and a 32,000-horsepower compressor station in New Jersey.

Working simultaneously from the mainline tie-ins towards the new station as well as from the compressor building towards the mainline tie-ins accommodated an accelerated construction schedule.

The REA expansion was designed to maximize the use of existing infrastructure and ease natural gas supply constraints affecting customers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland. The project has increased the region’s natural gas capacity by 829,000 dekatherms per day, enough to serve approximately 4.4 million homes annually.
