Survey Says…???

July 19, 2022

GSMA’s recent survey, “Making Mobile Networks More Sustainable and Energy Efficient” shares some good news about the mobile industry making progress when it comes to tracking and disclosing climate data and setting goals for reducing emissions.

Key findings include:

  • Over 70% of respondents said they were either very familiar or somewhat familiar with their company’s net-zero goals.
  • Nearly one-third of respondents shared they use a combination of software and manual checks to monitor their energy sources.
  • Over 60% of respondents said that their cell sites use a variety of energy sources including electricity, batteries and solar power.

But… the survey also revealed some areas in need of improvement. For example, tracking carbon emissions is essential to achieving net-zero goals. Yet, 31% of the survey respondents said their companies do not track emissions from data centers, base stations, towers or operations centers.

In response, the Earth commented, “Ouch.”
