Latest from Professional Development/Leadership
In April, another terrible shooting occurred. This time in a Tennessee Waffle House. Four people were killed. The shooter was apprehended after a 36-hour manhunt.
Several others were wounded during the horrendous experience. They included James Shaw Jr., a 29-year-old restaurant patron who burned his hand grabbing the hot muzzle of the assault weapon he wrestled away. He is being hailed as a hero by Nashville Mayor David Briley despite his humble statement. Shaw said that he grabbed the gun of the suspect out of self-preservation. In that moment, he made up his mind that the shooter "was going to have to work to kill me."
Interestingly, Shaw works as a wireless technician for AT&T. And while this edit note won’t get to you until June, I thought it important to offer our late appreciation to James. Too often, incredible efforts made by people in our industry are overshadowed by, well, other stuff.
Thankfully, most of you won’t have the frightening opportunity that James had. Still, we know you are cut from the same cloth. You have the character that propels you to go the extra mile and do what is right. It’s not just the big things; little unseen acts of kindness and leadership are what this industry is all about.
Thank you from the ISE Team.
